What is a Master Franchisee?
A 3 Part Explanation
Sometimes opportunities cross my desk that I think are really attractive. I almost hesitate to use that word. It is what I think of when I see a franchise that has all of the right components:
- a lower barrier to entry
- is recession resistant
- cannot be replaced by technology
- one that has a proven concept and a proven track record
I am always examining businesses for this combination. When the company is still growing enough to offer Master Franchise opportunities, AND also possesses these “golden four” components, I like to make sure to present it to everyone who has the right personality for success in this role.
First of all, what’s a Master Franchisee?
Master Franchisee is a title given to someone who owns the rights to a franchise within a large territory or city. They bring on and develop franchisees under them within that territory. As a result, the franchisees pay the Master a franchise fee and a monthly royalty to operate in that area. When a company is still growing its franchise and large territories are available, selling a Master Franchise territory is a great way for the Franchisor to expand. When more markets are built out, there are fewer Master Franchise opportunities. Getting in on the ground floor can be a very lucrative business. A Maser Franchise is one of the best kept secrets in franchising and provides the greatest possible Returns on Investment.
Master Franchisees who are successful at what they do have common skill sets and personality traits. If you fit the profile, and are looking for a scalable business model where you benefit from helping others succeed in business, a Master Franchise could be a rewarding career shift for you.
Do you have the skill set?
The role of Master Franchisee combines several skill sets. It helps to have sales or operational experience, and to have managed a sales team. Successful sales people understand how to interact with people; they know how to present a solution that benefits both parties and how to nurture relationships. Managing and operating a sales team requires good organization, an understanding of human psychology, and a passion for coaching others.
Do you have the innate personality traits?
Is it enjoyable for you to develop people? How about coaching people? Is it rewarding for you to watch people grow? If so, this is probably a role for you. The Master Franchisee is not managing a team of employees as much as coaching his team of franchisees on growing their businesses. If you know how to think strategically, enjoy learning and are the type of person comfortable with giving advice, you would enjoy owning a Master franchise.
In summary – being a Master Franchisee gives you an option to consider beyond franchising a single location.
