3 Crucial Habits That Will Get You to Your Goals
Get Out of Your Own Way. This blog will teach you how to set yourself on a road to achieving what you want. First – identify what it is that you want.
Not everyone has goals. Most people live every day in a fog of just “getting through the day”. If you are reading this, however, you are someone that has higher aspirations for their life. You are probably someone who has expressed an interest in owning a business. You may have other goals in addition to being a business owner. Maybe you want better health. It could be that you want to live in the best part of town, or you want a stronger marriage, or to be completely debt free. Goals vary from person to person. In working with people in transition and with executives who want to achieve more, it has become clear to me that people unconsciously stop themselves from moving forward by getting in their own way. I’ll say it again, they get in their OWN way!
Do you want get some traction on your goal? Are you ready to move forward? Here are 3 steps to getting out of your own way so you can work toward getting to the goal you have set – and beyond.
Get Out of Your Own Way Step 1. Identify the BIG Goal
In order to gain traction on your goal, whatever it may be, you have to identify one big goal. Sit down and write down all of your goals. Then look them over, and decide if there is one goal that would have an impact on your ability to achieve the rest of your goals. For example, if you want to buy a business, and get out of debt, and have a better relationship with your partner, and get into better health, you have to decide what is going to make the biggest difference if you accomplish it first. When you analyze it, you might be surprised.
Get Out of Your Own Way Step 2. Goal Set “to the Now”.
This is an effective exercise for breaking down your “Someday” most important goal. This idea comes from the book, The One Thing, by Gary Keller. Ask yourself the following questions:
Someday Goal – What’s the one thing I want to do someday?
Five Year Goal – Based on my Someday Goal, what the one thing I can do in the next five years?
One Year Goal – Based on my five-year goal, what’s the ONE thing I can do this year?
Monthly Goal – Based on my one year goal, what’s the one thing I can do this month?
Weekly Goal – Based on my Monthly Goal, what’s the one thing I can do this week?
Daily Goal – Based on my weekly goal, what’s the one thing I can do today?
Right Now – Based on my Daily Goal, what’s the one thing I can do right now?
You can find the printout here for “Goal Setting to the Now”. This should be reviewed every day – which brings us to our last step.
Get Out of Your Own Way Step 3: Time Block
This step is key. It requires you to get up a little earlier to review your Goal Setting worksheet and figure out how to set your purpose for every day. Once you understand that you need to do something every day to get to your goal, you will need to block time to work on it. That requires you to look at your day and plan when exactly you are going to work on your goal. Block out time – 1 hour, 3 hours, whatever you need – to work on your RIGHT NOW goal every day. Here is a link to a printout that can be used on any given day to get you started.
These steps will set you on a path to achieve your first goal. After that, tackle your second! You will be amazed at what you can do. So, get out of your own way and get started on your future!
