The Great Resignation And How It Has Impacted Business

The Great Resignation And How It Has Impacted Business

For the majority of 2020 and 2021, our business doors were closed to the public, and many employees were working from home to keep the business running. In the fall of 2021 and now into 2022, businesses have slowly started reintegrating back into what they call “normal business.”  But what we used to call “normal” isn’t the norm anymore.  Actually, due to the pandemic, “normal business” methods are outdated and unwanted.

This is due to  “The Great Resignation” that took place in 2021 and continues to take place now in 2022.

What is The Great Resignation?

Since April 2021, close to 40 million people have quit their jobs, and the phrase “The Great Resignation” was coined to describe this mass exodus from the workplace.

In August of 2021 alone – merely 6 months ago, 4.3 million people resigned from their jobs. That is almost 3% of the American workforce.  Why? Because the pandemic was slowly receding, and businesses were trying to go “back to normal.”

As we said above, “Back to normal” isn’t the way to go.  Who wants to move backward when you can adapt and move forward? The pandemic showed us that working remotely and adapting to new methods of work could, in fact, work just as well as if everyone was in their cubicles in February of 2019.  Technology was embraced and welcomed, and people shifted to a LIFE-Work balance instead of a WORK-life balance.

This new shift and way of working was the preferred method of basically every employee (who wouldn’t want to work from home and live their lives), so when the switch was flipped, and they were to come back to the office 5 days a week, they said NO THANK YOU.

It wasn’t because they weren’t happy with their job or the employer; it was because they knew they could do the same thing at home for another company anywhere in the world.

Everyone knows the saying “Adapt or die,” which is now ever apparent with the Great Resignation sending employees to the exit and choosing a better work-life balance than ever before.

How Can Businesses Keep Employees?

That is a great question, and we’d love to answer that for you. At MVision Consulting, we work with companies small and large to bring employees and their management teams together.  We encourage you to all work in harmony and use proven practices and methods for keeping morale high, employees feeling valued and trusting their superiors, and most importantly, keeping employee retention high!

Employees are the backbone and the most important aspect of a business.  If you do not have satisfied and happy employees, you will not have a successful business.  It is that simple.

So when the door began to open up as the pandemic began to slow, did you go back to the “normal” ways of doing things, or did you adapt and work towards a new normal? Not sure what steps to take?

We’ve curated a couple of tips to help you!

Hybrid Work Environment

If you had employees who were able to properly do their jobs in the comfort of their own home, allow them to stay there! You can have them come into the office a few times a month for meetings and to have face-to-face communication, but if they are able to be stellar employees from behind the computer screen, allow them this opportunity!

You can choose a hybrid work environment that utilizes both office and home-based work schedules or even use working from home full time as an incentive for employees who are just starting out!

If you are nervous about how continuing to work from home may impact communication, leadership, and the community you’ve built “in-house,” we can help you work through that with effective communication strategies and team coaching!

Look At Your Company Culture

Now more than ever, people are valuing their health, both mentally and physically. Take a look at the culture you’ve set in the past and see if it needs evaluating. Are you employees working themselves to the point of mental breakdown? Is there a narcissistic manager fueling toxicity in the workplace? Are your employees happy? Does your current company culture breed change leadership, or are you seeing team dysfunction at work? Ask yourself and your management team these questions and reinvigorate your culture to embrace positive outlooks and encourage adaptability, collaboration, and trust.
