What Are The 3 C’s Of Change Leadership?
Progress is impossible without change…
No one likes change, but it is the one constant in our lives. As creatures of habit, once we get into a comfortable routine, it’s hard to accept the new and let go of the old.
This is true for life and for work.
When a company goes through changes, even small ones, the transition can be chaotic and negative if nothing is done to change the narrative.
Change Leadership: Style of management that has the ability to inspire, influence, and motivate others during times of transition, change, and growth.
As leaders in your organization, you must be the ones to promote positivity and enthusiasm for this change. Even though you may be uncertain of everything at times, as a change leader, you are in control of what happens next.
What can you do as leaders to take the reins and help your teams navigate through with the least resistance? You can use the 3 C’s of Change Leadership.
3 C’s Of Change Leadership
When dealing with change, it has been found that the foundation of change leadership begins with these 3 skills:
- Communication
- Collaboration
- Commitment
It is on the basis of these skills that a change leader can affect the environment of their entire team’s transition.
Communication
If you don’t talk about it, how will your team know what’s happening? Explain what is happening, why it’s happening, and how you plan to help the team through.
This skill is about managing fear and anxiety by openly communicating what you know and how it’s OKAY.
Knowing the change is happening can put your body into a sort of “panic” mode, and you’ll quickly find yourself going through the motions without stopping to think about what is actually going on. Instead, slow down, plan and talk to your team. The more they understand, the more they are able to accept what is happening and follow you through it.

Collaboration
This is the perfect time to ask your team for input. Engage with them and ask them how the company can do better, what they would like to see done differently, and more. This is where strategic planning comes into play. You’ll be able to help shift your team’s focus from one of resistance to one of vision, purpose, and big picture thinking.
When you include them from the very beginning, you’ll find that they are more open, understanding, and communicative about how they feel.
To allow this to happen, though, there must be an element of trust that will enable them to speak freely and openly about their thoughts and feelings during this change.
Commitment
As we said above, we are creatures of habit, and change doesn’t come easy. This happens with leaders and managers too! When change occurs, you may be resistant at first, but in order for our teams to successfully transition through, it is you, the leader, who must be open-minded and have a willingness to change. By committing to those actions, you’ll start looking at the change as a new, positive movement rather than the destruction of the past.
Step outside of your comfort zone and your own boundaries by standing firm and leading by example. Those who see that you are closed off, negative and resistant will also feel the same.
