Communication Styles: How To Communicate Effectively

Communication Styles: How To Communicate Effectively

You catch more flies with honey than vinegar.

We’ve all heard that saying before, but have you actually ever applied it to anything?

This is a great example of communication in the workplace.

Have you ever gotten anywhere with someone through an argument or aggressive forms of communication?

As a leader, you are there to create an open field of communication with your team. You do this through building trust, being honest with them about what is happening in the workplace, and learning what they think could be done better.

Importance Of Workplace Communication

Research has shown that over 80% of employees and executives cite ineffective communication as the reason for poor team dynamics and workplace failure. On the other hand, improved communication can boost productivity by as much as 25%!

In a world where your entire team can be in one office or across the globe, it’s essential to learn how to communicate effectively and efficiently!

Communication Tips

Here at MVision Consulting, we understand the vital importance of workplace communication and how effective communication from leadership can create highly functional teams. That’s why we have curated some simple but effective communication tips for you to use as building blocks for your own communication style!

Body Language & Tone

Your mouth is saying one thing, but your body language is saying another. So, yes, as part of being a leader of your team, it is your responsibility to communicate.

If you speak to someone in person, how you move, where you put your arms, or even rolling your eyes, can tell someone how you truly feel.

The same goes for the tone of voice. If you’re making an announcement you aren’t particularly excited about, it’ll all come through in the sound of your voice.

Take note of how you’re feeling, and be aware beforehand of what and how you are communicating!

Active Listening

Listen to understand, not to respond.

If you’re just trying to think of something to say in response to what someone is telling you, you will never get anywhere.

By being an active listener, you truly hear what the other person is saying and what they mean. In addition, through active listening, you’ll get insight that you might never have gotten by being a reactive listener.

Trust

If your team doesn’t trust you, you will never know what’s happening. Building trust opens communication for your staff to speak freely (within reason) without fear of retaliation or punishment. Likewise, your staff should never be afraid of bringing issues or concerns to your attention.

If they are, you’ll never know what’s holding the team back and causing them to lag behind.

By not gossiping, complaining, using their thoughts in a negative way, and respecting their opinions, you’ll allow for a better flow of communication!
